Dubai trade name and initial approval: what each step actually confirms

By the Trivup team3 min read

Reserving a trade name, receiving initial approval and obtaining a trade licence are different milestones in a Dubai business setup. Each answers a different question. Understanding the difference helps you ask for the right evidence and avoid treating an early-stage document as permission to start operating.

What a trade name reservation is for

A trade name identifies the proposed business in the registration process. Before choosing one, prepare alternatives and consider whether the wording fits the activities you intend to carry out.

Invest in Dubai’s trade name service describes naming rules, including suitability, distinction from existing names and a logical relationship to the business activity. A name that sounds attractive in a marketing plan may still need to be changed for registration.

Ask the advisor to check the proposed spelling and legal-form wording before you rely on the name in contracts or other commitments. A domain name or social media account with matching words is not evidence that a licensing authority has accepted the trade name.

What initial approval does and does not mean

The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism’s establishment guide explains that initial approval does not grant permission to run the business or practise its activity. Treat it as a stage in the setup process, not the final operating document.

Ask what remains outstanding for your case. Depending on the proposed setup, the discussion may include constitutional documents, premises, activity-specific approvals or other requirements identified by the licensing authority. Request the checklist for your actual structure rather than assuming that every company follows an identical path.

What to check when the licence is issued

Review the business name, legal form, listed activities and other particulars with your advisor. If something does not match the agreed plan, raise it before relying on the document.

Also ask which separate steps remain. Trivup’s business setup service distinguishes licensing from immigration-file, residence and bank-account support. Receiving a trade licence should not be confused with receiving every other approval your plans may require.

Avoid the common document mix-ups

What you haveWhat to ask next
A preferred business nameHas the authority accepted it, and what changes or conditions apply?
A name reservationWhat other steps are required for the proposed setup?
Initial approvalWhich requirements remain before the business can be licensed and operate?
A trade licenceDoes it match the intended activities, and are any additional permissions or registrations still required?

Prepare a clear discussion with your advisor

Bring your preferred names, a plain description of the work, proposed owners, office requirements and residence plans. The Dubai company document checklist can help you organise this information.

Ask for the proposed sequence in writing, including what each document represents and who makes the decision at each stage. Speak with a real Trivup business advisor for current procedures and compliance requirements. An AI summary can help explain terms, but cannot confirm that your particular business is authorised to operate.

Questions about early setup approvals

Can I start operating after initial approval?

Do not treat initial approval as operating permission. The official establishment guide says it does not authorise running the business or practising the activity.

Does buying a website domain reserve my trade name?

No. A domain registration and the licensing authority’s trade name process are different. Check the proposed name through the appropriate service.

Can a name be checked before I decide the activity?

Discuss both together. The activity affects how the proposed name and the wider setup should be assessed.
