There is no single document called a "freelance visa". The phrase usually means a freelance permit (the right to work in your own name), a residence visa (the right to live in the UAE), or both applied for together. Which route you need depends mostly on one question: do you already hold UAE residency?
What "freelance visa" actually means
People searching for a freelance visa in Dubai are usually asking about two separate applications, made to different authorities for different purposes.
- The freelance permit or license lets you work in your own name, in the activities you choose. It is issued by a free zone authority.
- The residence visa is your right to live in the UAE. It is decided by the immigration authority, and it comes with a medical examination and an Emirates ID.
When you hold a freelance license, it can be what sponsors your residence visa, so you are not tied to an employer. That self-sponsored arrangement is what most people mean when they say "freelance visa".
A permit and a license are not the same thing. Both are sole proprietor establishments in your own name, but only a license lets you invoice clients, open a business bank account, hold a residence visa through it and sponsor your family. We explain the difference in freelance permit or license: which one in the UAE.
The three routes
| Route | Who it is for | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Freelance permit only | People who already hold UAE residency, for example as a dependant, a Golden Visa holder or a GCC national | The permit that lets you work in your own name. You keep the residency you already have. |
| 2. Freelance permit and residency | People arriving from abroad, or leaving an employer | A freelance license, which is what can sponsor a visa, plus a self-sponsored residence visa, with the entry permit or a change of status, the medical and the Emirates ID. |
| 3. Residency and work permit | People who want residency without running their own freelance business | A residence visa and work permit through a MOHRE-licensed agency that employs and sponsors you. No freelance permit in your own name. |
Route 1: the permit alone
If you already have UAE residency, you have the status and are missing only the permit. Nothing else needs to be applied for, so the engagement is the permit and nothing more.
Route 2: a license with a self-sponsored residence visa
This is the route most people picture. The two applications are filed together because the license is what sponsors the visa. If you are already in the UAE, your status can change in the country. If you are abroad, you travel in on an entry permit instead.
Route 3: residency and a work permit through an agency
Here you are not self-employed. A MOHRE-licensed recruitment agency employs and sponsors you, and Trivup works as that agency's partner. It suits someone who wants residency but does not need to invoice clients in their own name. Read more on the work permit and residency page and in our guide to work permit and residency in the UAE.
How to choose between them
Work through these questions in order.
- Do you already hold UAE residency? If yes, through a spouse, a Golden Visa or a GCC passport, Route 1 is the likely fit. A Golden Visa is not the same as a freelance visa and carries no trading rights, so a Golden Visa holder who wants to invoice still needs the permit.
- Is your residency tied to an employer you are leaving, or are you arriving from abroad? Then you need both a permit and a visa: Route 2.
- Will you invoice clients, use a business bank account or sponsor family? If any of these matter, now or later, you need a license rather than a permit.
- Would you rather be employed and sponsored than self-employed? Route 3 is built for that.
Changing from a permit to a license after you have applied can add fees and processing time. It is worth deciding before you apply, not after.
If you are unsure, a Trivup consultant can talk through your situation and confirm the route in a written quotation before anything is filed.
What the process looks like
The steps differ by route, but a typical self-sponsored application on our freelance page runs in this order.
- Apply online. You give your details, up to 10 freelance activities from the published list, three preferred names for your license and permit, and your documents. A passport copy and a photograph are required, and nothing is charged when you send the form.
- Documents are checked. A person reviews every file, and a written quotation follows. Work starts only after you accept it.
- Approval and KYC. The application goes for approval, then for KYC verification.
- The license is issued, followed by the establishment card and E-Channel.
- Residency steps, if your package includes them: entry permit or change of status, medical examination, Emirates ID and visa stamping. The medical and Emirates ID appointments are attended in person in the UAE.
Who decides, and applying directly
Every approval in this chain, including initial approval, license or permit issuance, activities, the visa, security clearance and the Emirates ID, is decided by the relevant authority. Neither Trivup nor any agency can promise an outcome, and approval is never guaranteed.
Trivup is a private company, not a government office. You can apply to the authorities yourself without using an agency. If you would rather have someone prepare, submit and follow up the application for you, that is what our service is for. The authorities' own sites are linked at the foot of this article.
Renewal and family
Renewal
A freelance license and permit are renewed each year, and renewal is not automatic. Keeping everything valid is your responsibility, and renewing late can lead to fines, penalties or loss of status. We may remind you of expiry dates, but a reminder does not replace your own responsibility.
Depending on your package, renewal can involve more than the license itself: the establishment card, residence visa and Emirates ID renewals, a medical examination, health insurance and government service fees. Before you renew, you receive a renewal quotation to approve, with the license and permit component listed separately from the rest.
If you later cancel your package or transfer it, including asking for a No Objection Certificate, Trivup charges a service fee for handling that request on top of government fees. The fee is set at the time and told to you before we act.
Family
Family sponsorship comes with a freelance license, not with a permit. A license lets you sponsor your spouse and children, and in many cases parents, on the evidence the immigration authority asks for. Sponsorship follows the requirements in force when you apply. If family matters to you, say so before you choose a route.
Questions people ask
Is a freelance visa the same as a Golden Visa?
No. A Golden Visa is long-term residency granted on its own criteria and carries no trading rights. A freelance visa is ordinary renewable residency sponsored by a permit or license you hold. A Golden Visa holder who wants to invoice still needs the permit.
Do I need the visa, or only the permit?
Only the permit, if you already hold UAE residency through a spouse, a Golden Visa or a GCC passport. You need both if your residency comes from an employer you are leaving, or if you are arriving from abroad.
Can I apply from outside the UAE?
Yes. The form asks whether you are in the UAE now and adjusts. Some later residency steps, such as the medical examination and Emirates ID, need you in person in the UAE, and your consultant tells you when.
What happens if the application is rejected?
Approval is never guaranteed. If the initial approval is rejected, Trivup deducts an application, administrative and documentation fee and refunds the rest of what you paid for the initial application, under the terms you accepted.
Can I work in any activity I like?
No. You can work only in the activities approved and listed on your issued license or permit, up to 10 from the published list. If your work needs other permits or professional certifications, obtaining them is your responsibility.
