Choosing freelance activities in the UAE: describe the work you will actually do

By the Trivup team3 min read

The most useful starting point for activity selection is a plain description of what a customer will pay you to do. A broad job title such as “consultant”, “creator” or “designer” may cover different services. Your activity shortlist should describe the actual work, then be checked against the proposed licence or permit.

Write down the deliverables

Describe a normal project in a few sentences: who engages you, what you deliver, and whether you provide advice, produce a finished item, manage a service or sell goods. Avoid choosing an activity simply because its name sounds close to your job title.

For example, designing an advertising image, managing a client’s advertising campaign and selling advertising space are different descriptions of work. This example is a way to organise the conversation, not a recommendation that a particular activity code covers all three.

Open Trivup’s freelance activity search and try terms from your deliverables. Read the descriptions and the information shown about regulation or additional approval. Keep the code and full name of each candidate activity so your advisor can identify exactly what you selected.

The page also offers AI suggestions from a description of your work. Treat those as ideas to review. An AI match is not an authority’s approval, and a listing is not confirmation that it is available under every route or suitable for your circumstances.

Compare the scope before making a choice

QuestionWhy it helps
What am I delivering? It separates advice, production, management and trading instead of grouping them under one vague label.
Who will contract with me?It helps your advisor understand the commercial arrangement you intend to use.
Where will I perform the work?It gives the advisor context for checking the route and any location-related conditions.
Are there additional permissions? It prompts a check of activity-specific requirements before you rely on the selection.

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism’s business establishment guide treats choosing the business activity as an early setup decision. The issuing authority’s classification and approvals matter; a marketing description on your own website does not settle them.

If you offer more than one service

Make separate lines for services that are genuinely different. Ask whether the proposed activities can be combined under your chosen arrangement and whether anything falls outside the scope. Do not add unrelated activities merely because a selection box is available.

Also mention work you expect to add later. The advisor can explain how a change would be handled, rather than allowing you to assume that the first selection covers future services automatically.

Confirm the final selection before submission

Send the advisor your work description alongside the shortlisted names and codes. Ask them to confirm the proposed issuing authority, the scope of the permission, any additional approvals and how the activity appears on the final document.

Once the route is clear, follow the freelance document preparation guide and review Trivup’s freelance visa plans. A real advisor should confirm current requirements and compliance before you proceed.

Questions about activity selection

Does an AI suggestion mean the activity is approved for me?

No. It is a starting point for review. Confirm the scope, route and any extra conditions with the advisor and relevant authority.

Can I choose a broad activity and do any type of work?

Do not assume that. Ask what the selected activity includes and excludes, using examples of the work you plan to deliver.

What should I bring to the consultation?

A short work description, sample deliverables without confidential client information, and the names and codes of the activities you are considering.
