There is no single document checklist that covers everything advertised as a “freelance visa”. Start by confirming the permission you need for your work and the residence route being proposed. Then ask for a checklist that matches that route, your activity and your current immigration status.
Get the proposed route in writing
Ask the advisor to name the issuing authority, the work or business permission involved, and any separate residence application. Clarify whose name appears on each document and which steps are included in the service.
For an overview, see Trivup’s guide to freelance visa routes and the current freelance visa plans. A package title should lead to a discussion of the actual documents and permissions, not replace it.
Organise the information you already have
The following is a preparation list for your consultation. It is not a statement that every item is required for every application.
| Folder | What to organise |
|---|---|
| Identity and contact | Your current passport details, a readable passport copy, contact information and a recent photograph if requested. |
| Your work | A short description of your services, CV or professional background, and relevant qualifications or work examples that you can provide if needed. |
| Current UAE status | Details of any current visa, residence document or Emirates ID, and information about who currently sponsors you, where applicable. |
Use consistent names and dates across the file. If a name differs between a passport and a qualification, tell the advisor rather than trying to edit the document yourself. Keep original files available and ask whether a translation or attestation is needed before commissioning one.
Expect route-specific evidence
The official GDRFA self-employment Green Residence service, for example, refers to a freelance work permit, qualifications and income or financial evidence under that route’s conditions. That does not make its checklist the checklist for every freelance-related service.
Ask whether the route being offered to you is that service or a different arrangement. If it is different, request the relevant authority’s requirements. A correct application starts with the correct category.
Explain your existing status before changing anything
Tell the advisor if you already live in the UAE, have an employer or family sponsor, or are outside the country. Ask how the proposed route interacts with that status and whether any permission, cancellation or additional step applies to you.
Do not cancel an existing arrangement merely because you have received a quotation for another one. First obtain an explanation of the sequence, dependencies and what happens if an application needs more information.
Review the file and the service scope
- Check the exact activity and how it describes your real work.
- Ask which documents are required now and which may be needed later.
- Confirm what is included, excluded and subject to a separate approval.
- Read the applicable terms, refund conditions and renewal responsibilities.
- Use the document channel confirmed by your advisor, rather than putting personal identifiers into an AI prompt.

Questions about freelance application files
Can I use someone else’s successful application as my checklist?
Use it only as a conversation starter. Their route, activity and circumstances may differ from yours.
Is my CV proof that I am authorised to work?
No. A CV describes your background. Ask the advisor which permission is required for the work you intend to perform.
Does handing over every document guarantee approval?
No. The relevant authorities decide applications and may ask for clarification or additional evidence.
